In summer 2026 it costs ¥4,800 (≈$31) — and the same pieces, bought from the same operator’s cheaper pass, come to ¥4,400 (≈$28). In winter it comes to its parts exactly, and this page can now say why.

Is the pass cheaper in summer?

In summer 2026 the Snow Monkey Pass costs ¥400 more than building the same day from Nagaden’s free pass — ¥190 more for a child.

Against single tickets the pass does save ¥300 — so the pass beats no pass, and loses to the other pass. Both are sold from the same machines; the free pass runs on to 30 November. What ¥400 buys you is one ticket instead of three.
A TOUR IS AN OPTION HERE, NOT AN ANSWER Doing it yourself costs ¥4,400–4,800 (≈$28–31) and works. The $140 (≈¥21,800) day trip from Nagano is a different product — the timetable, the gate and lunch handled, Zenkō-ji added — at roughly 5× the price.
Is the pass cheaper in winter?
SAVES NOTHINGBoth winter editions equal their separate tickets to the yen. That looked like a curiosity until the free pass explained it: from December nothing undercuts the pass — and the pass undercuts nothing.

The ¥2,820 (≈$18) free pass that beats the summer edition is off sale all winter. With it gone, the pass is priced at exactly the sum of its parts.
In winter the Snow Monkey Pass saves exactly ¥0 in either edition — it buys the ticket queue, not a discount.
¥5,100 (≈$33) = ¥5,100 (≈$33) and ¥6,800 (≈$44) = ¥6,800 (≈$44). That is not a coincidence and not a trick: with no free pass on sale, the pass is the convenient way to buy the same fares. Winter 2026/27 prices were not announced at our snapshot of 7 Sep 2026 — if they move, the arithmetic above is how to re-check them.
IN WINTER THE QUESTION ISN’T PRICE — IT’S THE GATE Since 6 August 2026 the park sells a dated ticket and can delay or refuse entry on crowded days. Neither the pass nor a tour changes that — the park’s wording covers everyone, and Nagaden said as much when it stopped selling a pass that included entry. What a tour changes is that its ticket is already bought and somebody else is watching the queue and the last bus.

Six days, both editions
From 30 December 2025 to 4 January 2026 neither the rail edition nor the bus edition was sold. The notice said the period could be extended.
Because the park was over capacity
The stated reason: the park was exceeding its capacity, and the pass — which includes entry — could not guarantee admission. Selling a ticket that includes a gate you may not pass through was the problem.
Ordinary tickets stayed on sale
Trains and buses carried on as normal. The same notice said that ordinary tickets do not guarantee entry either — they simply do not bundle it.
What it tells you about peak days
Entry is the scarce part of the day, not the transport. On the days everyone wants, the thing worth securing is a dated ticket — and even that is not a promise.
NOTHING SOLD ANYWHERE GUARANTEES ENTRY ON THOSE DAYS A tour does not either, and this page will not pretend otherwise. What a tour changes on a week like that is who is standing in the queue watching the clock, and whether the last bus down the valley is your problem.
What no version of it covers
THE WALK ISN’T IN ITThe pass covers one railway, one bus and one gate. Four things people expect it to include are not in it, and one of them is the largest number in a Tokyo day.
FROM TOKYO THE PASS IS THE SMALL HALF OF THE DAY Two shinkansen legs at ¥8,340 (≈$53) each are more than double the pass itself, and no edition touches them. The coach that does Tokyo to the park and back carries the train, the bus, the ¥800 (≈$5.1) gate and lunch in one price — on this particular journey it is simply the better buy, which is not something this page says about the Nagano day.

Does the pass guarantee entry to the park?
No. Nagaden withdrew it from sale from 30 December 2025 to 4 January 2026 precisely because the park was over capacity and the pass could not guarantee admission. On crowded days the gate can delay or refuse entry — the park’s wording covers everyone, whatever they are holding.
Does the JR Pass cover any of it?
The JR Pass covers the Tokyo–Nagano shinkansen (¥8,340 (≈$53) reserved, each way) and nothing beyond it: covers Hokuriku Shinkansen; does NOT cover Nagano Dentetsu trains or Nagaden buses.
Snow Monkey Pass or a tour?
They are not the same purchase. The pass is fares, at ¥4,800 (≈$31); the $140 (≈¥21,800) day trip is a vehicle, a guide, lunch and the ¥800 (≈$5.1) gate at roughly 5× the assembled cost. Buying both is buying transport twice.
