Kyoto to Nagano is 3 h 30 with one change at Nagoya — the Tōkaidō shinkansen, then the Ltd. Exp. Shinano. Shin-Osaka is 4 h, either the same way or the Thunderbird to Tsuruga and the Hokuriku shinkansen. Add the 100 minutes from Nagano Station to the gate and the round trip is 10 h 20 from Kyoto before you have looked at a monkey.

From November to March the park closes at 16:00 and the park asks visitors to arrive 30 minutes before closing time, which puts the last useful start on the trail at about 14:50. A 10 h 20 round trip does not fit inside that, and no operator sells a way to make it fit.
